The bigger picture

Nigeria eats fish. Nigeria can't farm enough of it.

Nigerians consume roughly 3.6 million tonnes of fish a year, but the country produces just over 1 million tonnes domestically. The shortfall — well over 2 million tonnes — is bridged by frozen imports that drain foreign exchange and arrive days or weeks after landing.

Aquaculture is the fastest way to close that gap. African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and the Heteroclarias hybrid are the workhorse species — hardy, fast-growing, and ideally suited to West African pond conditions.

We farm them right here in Ogbomoso, Oyo State — one of the South-West's quietly emerging aquaculture clusters.

    Quality fingerlings sourced or hatched in-house. Stocked into nursery ponds with controlled feeding.

    Sorting & grading

    Every 4–6 weeks we grade by size to prevent shooters and reduce cannibalism.

    Grow-out

    Higher-protein feed, daily checks, weight sampling. The longest stage of the cycle.

  4. 04

    Health & QA

    Water quality logged, mortality tracked. Treatments only when justified, and posted publicly.

  5. 05

    Harvest & dispatch

    Hand-graded harvest. Live, dressed or smoked. Same-day dispatch within Oyo and surrounds.

Morning feed: 18 kg Coppens 4mm to Pond 1

Fed the table-size catfish their morning ration. Water surface activity was strong — fish came up immediately. No floating uneaten pellets after 15 minutes. Body condition still excellent across the cohort.

Pond 2 juveniles fed 9 kg crumble

Switched the juveniles to Coppens 3mm crumble this week as they have outgrown the 2mm. Feeding response is good. Will move to 4mm pellets in roughly two weeks based on growth rate.

Tilapia fry inspection — Pond 3

Did a manual inspection of 30 randomly netted fry. Fin condition healthy, no signs of fungus or parasitic load. Average weight has climbed to 4.5 g, on track for the schedule.
